The joys of the holidays are just around the corner. Unfortunately, so is the cold and flu season. While you may have already had your flu shot this year, you should remember that each new flu season brings new and resistant strains, and as we all know, there is no cure for the common cold.

Now is the time to add some extra armor in your battle against this winter’s viral army. Boosting your immune system can be natural, easy and even delicious with these immunity- boosting foods.

Green Tea
In the war on colds and flu, the most powerful weapon is green tea. Full of antioxidants, green tea is said to have disease-fighting powers, and can even protect your gums and prevent cavities. So why not opt out of your morning cup of coffee and start your day with these potent little leaves. Your immune system will thank you later!

Citrus Fruits
The letter of the season is “C,” as in Vitamin C, and citrus fruits are full of it. Vitamin C is another powerful antioxidant that enhances immunity by increasing the production of white blood cells, which fight off infection. Vitamin C also helps raise the levels of the antibody interferon, which coats cell surfaces and prevents viruses from entering the bloodstream. That glass of orange juice or grape fruit for breakfast is a great way to start the day on a path to good health. But don’t stop there. Vitamin C can also be found in strawberries, pineapples, green peppers, and potatoes.

Oysters
These slippery fellas pack a double whammy! They contain Omega-3 fats, which work to protect your immune system by increasing the activity of phagocytes, the white blood cells that eat up bacteria. They also help to strengthen cell membranes, thereby speeding up healing and boosting the immune system. Omega-3 can also be found in seeds, eggs, nuts, salmon, mackerel and tuna. And don’t forget to think zinc! Oysters also contain zinc, which helps to fight off colds by boosting white cell production.

Almonds
Almonds offer a cornucopia of nutrients including vitamin E, riboflavin, folic acid, fiber, potassium, magnesium, and calcium. Paired with Omega-3 rich foods, viruses don’t stand a chance.

Garlic
The vampires may have come and gone with Halloween night, but you will still want to keep plenty of garlic on hand to fend off those evil cold and flu symptoms. Hailed by many as a magic elixir, garlic’s pungent aroma and flavor can clear up congestion if one of those nasty little bugs finds its way in.

Chicken Soup
Not just an old wives’ tale, the healing power of chicken soup is undeniable. Long hailed as the Commander in Chief of cold- and flu-fighting foods, chicken soup is packed with zinc-rich chicken and vitamin-loaded vegetables. The hot temperature loosens congestion. Now don’t you feel better already?
